Sun Moon Lake Cable Car Station

The Sun Moon Lake Cable Car Station is located in Yuchi Township, Nantou. It is the starting station of Taiwan's first public cable car system built under the BOO (Build-Own-Operate, where the private sector plans, builds, and operates) model, officially commencing operations on December 28, 2009. The cable car route spans approximately 1.877 kilometers, connecting the Sun Moon Lake Cable Car Station on the southeastern shore of Sun Moon Lake with the Mountain View Tower at Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village. It has two stations and crosses Mount Bujishan along the way, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of Sun Moon Lake's magnificent scenery and the beautiful Puli Basin from above. The Sun Moon Lake Cable Car system was designed and manufactured by Austria's Doppelmayr company. It features 86 cabins, each capable of carrying approximately 8 passengers. A one-way trip takes about 7 to 10 minutes, with a maximum operating speed of 6 meters per second. The highest point reaches an altitude of 1044 meters, and the tower pillars are approximately 58 to 60 meters tall. The longest span between towers is 786 meters, and the system has a straight-line design. Solar panels are installed on top of the cable car cabins to provide power for the emergency broadcast system, combining environmental protection with safety considerations. Among them, the 'Sakura Queen' cabin is a specially designed crystal-clear cabin, adorned with hand-painted artwork themed after the Japanese Sakura Queen. It was officially named and unveiled on-site by Ms. Miuri Sugiura, the 30th generation Sakura Queen of Japan, symbolizing the deep friendship between Taiwan and Japan through cherry blossoms. The Sun Moon Lake Cable Car Station is conveniently located near Ita Thao Pier, offering easy access. Visitors can effortlessly take the cable car directly to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village without needing to drive, connecting two major popular attractions and significantly enhancing the travel experience and convenience. Cable car operating hours vary slightly between weekdays and holidays, and are subject to adjustment for major events or weather conditions. Operations are suspended on monthly maintenance days; please refer to the Sun Moon Lake Cable Car Station website for detailed dates. Opening hours: Weekdays 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Holidays 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Parking lot opening hours: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The first Wednesday of every month is a scheduled maintenance day, and the cable car will be closed on that day.
