Northern Frontier of the Nation

Standing at Taiwan's northernmost point. Many people know that the Republic of China's southernmost territory extends to Zengmu Ansha (James Shoal) in the Nansha (Spratly) Islands, but they might not know that its northernmost point is right here in Dongyin, Matsu. Head northwest from the Qingshuiao Checkpoint, follow the road, climb over the hill, and go straight to the end, and you will reach the Republic of China's 'Northern Frontier of the Nation.' However, the *actual* northernmost tip of Taiwan is a small reef located offshore from Luohanping Cape! This reef, also known as 'Beigu Reef,' is situated about 600 meters above Hou'ao, Xiyin. Currently, the reef island is uninhabited and appears or disappears with the rise and fall of the tides. To commemorate the 'Northern Frontier of the Nation' here and allow visitors to enjoy the view, the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration built an observation deck at Hou'ao Cape and erected a stone tablet inscribed with 'Northern Frontier of the Nation.' This provides visitors with a photo opportunity, so even if they don't see Beigu Reef, they can still prove they have visited the 'Northern Frontier of the Nation.'
