Skyline Gorge

Steep cliffs and a crack in the sky where one can listen to the roar of the waves. Skyline Gorge is located on the left cape of Tianwang'ao, on the eastern side of Dongyin Island. It is a towering sea-eroded gorge with two rock walls standing vertically, almost touching each other. It is narrow at the top and wider at the bottom, connecting to the sky above and the sea below. Whenever the tide rushes in, the waves at the bottom strike the rocks, creating a sound like ten thousand horses galloping, grandly reverberating between the rock walls. A tunnel is built between the two cliffs, connected by a concrete bridge. Although the bridge surface is only tens of meters above sea level, it gives an impression of over a hundred meters in height. The four characters '天縫聆濤' (Heaven's Crack, Listening to Waves) are inscribed on the rock wall, perfectly capturing the captivating essence of this spot. They were inscribed by General Lai Ming-Tang, then Chief of the General Staff, during his inspection visit to Dongyin in 1972. Carved solemnly into the towering rock face, they evoke a sense of desolate isolation, as if guarding a distant front line. In the past, Skyline Gorge was a military restricted zone, but today it is fully open, and visitors can enter freely without prior reservation. Descend the stairs to the end of the combat trench, where the 'Skyline Gorge' scenery unfolds before your eyes. You can visit anytime if you wish to hear the sound of the waves. Note: Visitors are reminded to be careful when ascending and descending the stairs, to watch out for slippery surfaces and falling rocks. Power will be shut off immediately after closing hours. Visitors are urged to cooperate and prioritize travel safety.
