Yanhsiu Chaoyin

The symphony of waves played by nature's orchestra. Yanhsiu Chaoyin is a naturally formed coastal wind cave located on the southern coast of Dongyin Island. It is surrounded by sheer cliffs with no visible opening, but connects to the sea through a fissure at the bottom of the valley. Daily tides cause seawater to rush into the valley, and the crashing waves against the rock face create echoes, hence the name 'Chaoyin' (Tidal Sound). As for 'Yanhsiu,' it means 'Swallow's Nest' in the local dialect. Due to the strong sea winds on the island, swallows were mostly unable to build nests under eaves and used to perch in the valley. However, after the ROC military garrisoned the area, live-fire exercises were often conducted nearby. The loud booming sounds of gunshots greatly startled the swallows, and they subsequently stopped nesting there. The area features Chaoyin Pavilion and a circular valley trail. Visitors can choose to enter from the left and exit from the right, or vice versa, completing a loop around the valley. The surroundings are dotted with protected plants such as Coastal Eurya and Pittosporum. Standing at the highest point of the valley, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of various landscapes, including sea cliffs, bays, capes, and sea caves. Especially when looking out at the Laoshusha Stone Forest, Raccoon Rock, and Chaoshankuei Rock, the magnificent seascape is truly breathtaking. Visitors should definitely not miss it. Note: This military scenic spot is open only to Taiwanese citizens. Groups (tour groups, companies, or organizations) and individuals (independent travelers, backpackers) may enter to visit after their ID cards are verified by the administrator (guard) and the application is completed.
