Loyalty Gate

Ascend the steps and reflect on the past charm. Before Zhongzhu Port was completed, the Loyalty Gate served as the primary entrance to Dongyin Island, a vital passage for both military personnel and civilians, as well as for the loading and unloading of fish catches. Today, it has lost its original functional role. The Loyalty Gate is an antique-style, semi-circular city wall structure located at the coastal entrance of Nanao on Dongyin Island. On either side of the gate tower are eight large characters in white on a red background, reading "Uphold Law and Be Pragmatic, Diligent and Frugal." Perched atop the city wall is a statue of a soldier holding a gun, exuding a heroic stance of "one man holding off ten thousand enemies," which reflects Dongyin's historical atmosphere as a former battlefield. Pass through the gate and climb the steps to reach the island's once-bustling "Central Road," which comprises Dongyin's mountain-side downtown areas – Zhongliu Village and Lehua Village. This district preserves many traditional Min-Dong style residences, built with sturdy granite, offering a rustic yet solid feel, reminiscent of "Jiufen in a war zone." From atop the city gate, next to the statue, you'll find an excellent vantage point to overlook Zhongzhu Port. To the left-rear of the Loyalty Gate is the Dongyin Realm Matsu Temple, reportedly built during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, and remains one of the local residents' important religious centers. Dongyin's Ever-Serving Warrior: On the Loyalty Gate stands a soldier statue, erected around 1974. Having served for over 40 years, it continues to stand steadfastly at its post. Inspired by a military recruitment commercial, it was named "A-Rong," and is considered to embody the collective spirit of Dongyin's military and civilian populations.
