Seek the mythical bird on the rising and falling Snake Mountain. Snake Mountain is not a single mountain; it is composed of four islets located off the western coast of Xiju. Arranged in a meandering line, they resemble a long snake coiling in the sea. Another theory suggests that the name comes from the sea-eroded landform in front of Snake Mountain's main peak, which, with the ebb and flow of the tide, resembles a snake flicking its tongue. Because Snake Mountain is very close to Xiju Island and connected to Kunqiu settlement by a tombolo (linked gravel beach), only the 'snake's head' remains above water during high tide. In the past, local residents could wade across during low tide to collect shellfish. However, due to the discovery of precious seabirds nesting and breeding on the islets, it has now been designated as a tern protected area. Snake Mountain is the only island within Juguang Township in the Matsu Tern Protected Area. Surveys have shown that Red-billed Tern, Bridled Tern, Black-naped Tern, Greater Crested Tern, and the mythical Chinese Crested Tern come here. Therefore, every summer, from the bird-watching pavilion, visitors have the chance to witness terns flying in unison and bathing on the beach to cool off, making it an excellent bird-watching spot highly praised by bird enthusiasts. Note: April to October is the breeding season for terns, and visitors are prohibited from climbing Snake Mountain. Visitors are reminded to avoid making noise to prevent disturbing the delicate tern guests and to pay attention to tidal changes for safety. Kunqiu Beach: Matsu's most beautiful beach. Kunqiu Beach is located at the western tip of Xiju Island. Its stunning sunsets are a unique highlight of Matsu, making it a worthwhile visit to this coastal paradise.
