Lèdào'ao

Lèdào'ao is a valley reservoir located along the coastline adjacent to the military station. The entire panoramic view of Lèdào'ao Reservoir can be seen from a high vantage point on Huandao North Road. The reservoir is situated north of Xiju Island, approximately one-third of the way from the left of what appears as an inverted triangle's top edge (referring to a geographical feature or map depiction). It was initially an open valley facing northeast, later turning north. Sediment accumulation at its mouth formed an inlet, originally named 'Láodāo'ao'. As this name sounded unpleasant ('Láodāo' means nagging), it was later renamed 'Lèdào'ao' due to its similar pronunciation. To address Xiju's perennial droughts and the island's water shortage, where water drawn from wells by residents was still insufficient for daily use, the military selected this valley to build a dam and impound water. Constructed with assistance from garrison soldiers, it is a multi-functional reservoir serving civilian needs, defense, and irrigation, with a catchment area of approximately 12 hectares. Today, Lèdào'ao has become an excellent place for residents to enjoy the beautiful bay and nearby mountain views. On clear days, the interpretative sign area along Huandao North Road offers a superb spot to admire the mainland landscape and the sunset. Along the circular road, abandoned strongholds are scattered, some with staircases next to their sentry posts leading down to the coast, all great places to explore mysteries and discover wonders.
