Dapu Stele

The Dapu Stele is an important historical relic that commemorates significant achievements. Designated as a Class 3 national monument in the Taiwan-Fujian region, it is located at the southernmost tip of Dongju Island. It was discovered by the ROC armed forces in 1953, and the Huaigu Pavilion was subsequently built to protect it from damage. The inscription on the rock slab details the remarkable feat of General Shen You-rong during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli reign, who successfully captured 69 Japanese pirates on Dongju without a single casualty. The calligraphy was penned by Dong Ying-ju, then the Right Vice Minister of Works, leaving a valuable testament to the rampant piracy that plagued Matsu in its early history. From the Dapu Stele, visitors can look out towards the sea and see anti-landing obstacles (軌條砦) scattered in the water. A wooden boardwalk leads down to the shore, where rugged reefs create a distinctive and intriguing landscape. Beyond its historical record of General Shen You-rong's brilliant military exploits, local residents also widely believe that the Dapu Stele itself is a treasure map. It is said that if one can decipher the hidden clues within the text, a treasure might be found somewhere on Dongju Island. Visitors are encouraged to put their minds to the challenge! Note: The wooden boardwalk is close to the sea and has been exposed to long-term erosion from wind, rain, and sun. Please walk carefully and slowly.
