Giant Cannon Battery

Thunderous giant cannons defend the northern frontier. Meishi Battery is situated in a strategically vital location, its unique natural terrain forming an optimal defensive barrier capable of repelling enemies at sea and destroying them miles away. The artillery unit stationed at the Meishi position traces its origins back to June 10, 1959, with the establishment of the 1st Company of the 643rd Artillery Battalion. This was the year following the 823 Artillery Battle, a time of immense hardship. Over time, the Meishi artillery unit has undergone numerous changes in its designation, but despite these modifications, the soldiers have remained steadfast and united in their dedication to defending the northern frontier. The heavy artillery fire of the unit is characterized by the power of 'thunder shaking mountains and lightning striking with awe-inspiring might across the seas,' deterring any invading enemy from daring to cross the line. To honor the loyal and dedicated spirit of the artillery, a museum was specially established and opened for exhibition at Meishi, under the directive of Commander Lieutenant General Zhang Qing-xiang, with the aim of inspiring soldiers to fully embrace their responsibilities and never forget their mission. In recent years, as Matsu has shed its battlefield image, it has gradually transformed into a popular tourist destination. The Giant Cannon Battery, located near Nangan's Meishi Cove and concealed by dense trees, houses Taiwan's largest active 240mm giant cannon position. This colossal cannon weighs over 20,000 kilograms, boasts a 24-centimeter caliber, and its carriage tires alone are nearly as tall as a person. It requires 12 soldiers for operation and has a range of tens of kilometers. Revered as Matsu's 'Island Guardian Treasure,' it stands as an exclusive attraction primarily for Taiwanese visitors. Meishi Battery. Meishi, or Plum Stone, is named for the majestic, plum-blossom-like arrangement of rocks within its cove.
