Dahan Stronghold

Firmly grasping the sea frontier, demonstrating the Great Han's heavenly might. Walking along the trail near Nangan Tourist Center, one arrives at Dahan Stronghold, located on the Tieban coastline south of Nangan. Together with other strongholds like Juguang Island, 33, and 46, it controls Tieban and Meishiao, forming a tight blockade network that controls the waterway towards Juguang, making its strategic position extremely important. In 1975, due to operational mission requirements, officers and soldiers of the Army's Dengbu Unit worked in shifts day and night. As equipment was rudimentary at the time, apart from using explosives for blasting, the rest was excavated inch by inch by hand, and it was completed on March 29, 1976. The stronghold is divided into three levels: the uppermost level housed the military's company headquarters. The second level included living quarters and a reserve machine gun position. The lowest level featured four 90mm anti-aircraft gun emplacements, a briefing room, a Chung-shan room, storerooms, and other spaces. The tunnels are approximately 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters high; the main tunnel is 150 meters long, and the branch tunnels are 80 meters long, totaling 230 meters. As the war situation eased and recognizing its value for tourism development, the ROC military handed Dahan Stronghold over to the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration, and renovation was completed in 2006. Stepping into the stronghold, every gun and cannon barrel faces the sea, imbued with a solemn and stern atmosphere, reflecting the ROC military's stance of 'firmly grasping the sea frontier, the Great Han's heavenly might' back then.
