Sihwei Village

Sihwei Village is a traditional settlement in Nangan, offering charming sea views. Heading further north from Matsu Village, you'll reach the westernmost tip of Nangan Island, also known as "Xiwei" (West End). It is one of Nangan's rare well-preserved villages. The former office of Lin Yi-ho, a legendary figure in Matsu's past, still remains here. During that era, troops were stationed in the village, and facilities such as power plants and rice mills were built, driving Sihwei Village's prosperity. However, it gradually declined, and today only a few households reside here. Many areas, not yet fully restored, retain more of their original appearance. Sihwei Village boasts a simple and rustic charm, nestled against Qiugui Mountain and facing the coast. With fishing boats dotted across the sea, it presents a truly enchanting scene, even more breathtaking at sunset, earning it the beautiful name "Sunset at Xiwei." The Matsu Fisheries Research Institute, originally located at Furong Ao in Sihwei Village, was the primary base for developing Matsu's aquaculture industry, especially renowned for its mussels. Thanks to the farming methods developed by the institute and the island's unique natural conditions, mussels have become an indispensable delicacy on Matsu's dining tables. A visit to Matsu would be incomplete without savoring this delicious flavor. In 2018, the Fisheries Research Institute was renovated into the Blue Tears Ecological Museum, which also undertakes the cultivation of "Blue Tears" (bioluminescent plankton).
