White Horse Wenwu Great King Temple

The beauty of traditional art, both serene and vibrant. The White Horse Wenwu Great King Temple is located by the sea in Koti'ao, a small inlet north of Mazu Village. In summer, when the south wind blows, fishing boats from Tieban and Jinsha areas often come here for shelter. Inside the temple, two deities, the Wenwu Great Kings, are enshrined. Although they both ride white horses, similar to the more common White Horse Venerable King, they are distinct deities. Legend has it that during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, two bodies drifted ashore at Koti'ao, which villagers then buried. Soon after, the Wenwu Great Kings conveyed a divine oracle through the exclusive spirit medium of Prince Pan, leading to the temple's construction. After its completion, whenever a storm approached, a lantern light would appear, moving across the inlet, warning coastal fishing boats to return for shelter. This divine protection further solidified the villagers' devout faith. The temple was built in the 'Fengshan' (firewall) architectural style, typical of the Fujian-East region. Its small and exquisite appearance, featuring gray stone bricks accented by vibrant and fluid lines on the gables, is both serene and striking, truly reflecting the beauty of traditional art.
