Embodying hundreds of years of Matsu's evolving history, the Matsu Folk Culture Museum is a must-visit for anyone wishing to understand Matsu's past, experience its culture, and gain a comprehensive overview. Renovated in 2002, this building features one basement level and four above-ground floors. Its exterior not only boasts distinctive Min-Dong (Fujianese) characteristics but is also adorned with old wine jars, small windows, and 'beauty rests' (a traditional type of railing/bench), showcasing the essence of Min-Dong aesthetics with its elegant charm. Inside, the museum houses numerous artifacts from the daily lives of Matsu's ancestors. Each floor features a different theme, meticulously documenting every aspect of Matsu, from its historical origins, topography, and everyday life, to its language, culture, customs, and architecture. Upon entering, the first floor plays a documentary about Matsu during the period of military administration, offering insight into the lives of soldiers and civilians at that time. It also features an exhibition area showcasing Matsu's recent archaeological achievements and its geographical location. The second floor displays Matsu's traditional architecture and industrial aspects, while the third floor focuses on the ritualistic meanings associated with religious beliefs, traditional opera, folk music, and handicrafts. Further up, the top floor serves as a public exhibition space, frequently hosting special art exhibitions. While exploring the various islets of Matsu, be sure to set aside time to visit the Folk Culture Museum; you will undoubtedly find it a rewarding experience.
