Juguang Township, Matsu, was formerly known as Baiken. Since "ken" is the onomatopoeic sound for "dog" in Fuzhou dialect, it was also called Baiquan (White Dog). The two islands resemble two small dogs lying on the sea, hence the eastern island was called Dongquan (East Dog) Island and the western island was called Xiquan (West Dog) Island. In 1971, it was renamed Juguang Township, taking the meaning of "never forget the lesson of Ju" (毋忘在莒), and the islands were renamed Dongju and Xiju. The Juguang Visitor Center is located next to Fuzheng Village on Dongju Island.
