Qiaozi Settlement

Formerly a commercial port, it boasts eight temples in one village, the most in all of Matsu. Qiaozi Fishing Village, a small settlement located in the northwest of Beigan, is nestled within a north-sloping valley on the shady side of Mt. Bi. The valley floor, carved by rainwater, is crisscrossed with gullies, and small bridges are visible everywhere within the village. In the Matsu dialect, “zai” (仔) means “small,” which is how it got the name “Qiaozi.” Qiaozi Settlement once prospered from fishing and salt production, serving as a transshipment port for trade with mainland China. In those days, with passenger boats and merchants constantly coming and going, its population exceeded a thousand, making it Beigan’s largest village. The houses in Qiaozi also preserve traditional Mindong (Eastern Fujian) architectural features. It is also the settlement with the most temples in all of Matsu, earning it the moniker “Temple Village.” However, after a significant outward migration of its population, its former glory faded. Besides the current scarcity of residents, it has even led to the interesting phenomenon where “there are more gods than people.” Here, you can admire the beautiful features of Matsu’s traditional temples, with their red walls, green tiles, and firewall gables that appear to burn like flames. In the village center, you can even witness the unique sight of “three temples in one.” Enjoy a boat trip and look for deer: A simple pier for boats to Daqiu is located on the left side of Qiaozi Bay. Qiaozi Port was once a supply port for the “frontline” islands of Gaodeng and Liangdao, further from Beigan. Nowadays, during peak tourist season, there are regular boat services taking visitors to Daqiu Island to explore its scenic beauty and search for sika deer. The boat trip only takes 5 minutes.
