Due to the climate regulation by the Pacific Ocean currents and the Kuroshio Current, coupled with a history free from severe environmental pollution and damage, a diverse array of medicinal plants has grown in the Taitung region since ancient times. During the Japanese colonial period, Japanese settlers cultivated medicinal herbs in the mountainous areas around Taitung's Jhihben and Taimali, developing them into what was known as a 'medicine mountain.' With the exception of a few introduced species, the vast majority were native medicinal herbs from the Taitung region (including Orchid Island). According to statistics from herbal experts, Taitung boasts over 2,000 species of medicinal herbs, making it truly 'the home of Taiwan's medicinal herbs.'
