The Hualien River separates Darong Village and Shanxing Village in Fenglin Township. Historically, during the dry season, only a makeshift bamboo bridge connected these two villages for people to cross. In the summer of 1977 (Republic of China Year 66), a typhoon caused flooding that destroyed the bamboo bridge. At that time, Chen Guoyi, the Director of Academic Affairs at Shanxing Elementary School, along with three other teachers—Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan—intended to cross the river to get to school. Despite the rapid currents, they held hands, attempting to ford the river. Tragically, they lost their footing and fell into the water. Teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying unfortunately drowned and perished in the line of duty.
