First Guesthouse

The First Guesthouse is a building from the Japanese colonial period, featuring a hybrid Japanese and Western architectural style exterior. Originally, the guesthouse was built by the Japanese government in 1912, as an annex to the Matsushima Memorial Hall. This was done to commemorate the 223 officers and soldiers who died aboard the Matsushima battleship, which exploded in the waters off Penghu in 1908. It primarily served as an accommodation for Japanese imperial family members and high-ranking officials. Later, in 1940, due to the construction of Magong No. 1 Fishing Port, the guesthouse was relocated and rebuilt on the elevated northern side of Guanyinting (Kannon-tei Temple), where the view became even more expansive.
