Hujing Islet Recreation Area

Hujing Islet is the seventh largest island in the Penghu Archipelago, located 7 nautical miles from Magong City. The island features spectacular basaltic columnar joints. Hujing Chengyuan (Clear Abyss of Hujing), one of Penghu's old eight scenic spots, refers to the sight at low tide when looking down from the sea cliff, where the sea appears crystal clear to the bottom. Legend has it that a tiger once hid in a dry cave on the southeastern side of the island, hence the name 'Hujing' (Tiger Well). Another theory suggests that the name comes from a well on the island that produced sweet spring water, called 'Haojing' (Good Well), which sounds similar to 'Hujing' in Minnanese (Taiwanese Hokkien). These theories are not yet definitively substantiated by research and are provided for reference and thought only.
