Visitor Essentials
Anyone visiting Penghu must go to Fenggui to listen to the sound of the waves, or it's as if they haven't truly been to Penghu. "Fenggui Listening to the Waves" is a famous attraction in Penghu. Fenggui Village is located at the tip of the Fenggui Peninsula, which local Penghu residents refer to as "Fengguiwei." The basalt columnar joints on the southern shore of the settlement are highly developed. Wave erosion has created a long, narrow sea trench, the bottom of which has been further eroded into a sea cave. From the sea cave, a small hole extends up to the ground along the joint fissures. Whenever there is a high tide with strong southern winds, long waves rush into the sea trench, compressing the air inside the sea cave. This forces seawater out through the fissures, producing a whistling sound, much like the sound of a blacksmith's bellows.
