Guanyinting Waterfront Recreation Area

Guanyinting, also known as Guanyin Temple, is located on the western coast of Magong City Wall. It was founded in the 35th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign (1696 AD) during the Qing Dynasty by Xue Kui, a naval guerrilla commander from Penghu. The temple enshrines the greatly compassionate Guanyin Bodhisattva of the South Sea and is the earliest Buddhist temple in all of Penghu. In the 11th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign (1885 AD), it was once destroyed by French forces. In the 17th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign (1891), General Wu Hongluo donated silver for its repair. It has undergone multiple renovations since the Japanese colonial period, and in the 48th year of the Republic (1959 AD), it was expanded and rebuilt into its current appearance.
