Guoye Lime Kiln

This gray-white, castle-like building on the Guoye coast is the Guoye Lime Kiln. Although located on state-owned protective forest land, it was a lime production kiln facility built independently by local residents. When it was built in 1960, cement was not yet widespread, so the walls were constructed using local Penghu basalt and mortar. Later additions saw the introduction of hollow brick walls, reinforced concrete floor slabs, and roofs. During the era when the Guoye Lime Kiln was established, the construction industry on Taiwan's main island was booming. At that time, lime was the predominant adhesive for building materials, leading to large quantities of Penghu lime being sold to Taiwan's main island.
