Hujing Columnar Basalt

Hujing Island is the seventh largest island in the Penghu Archipelago. Hujing was originally named 'Haojing' (Good Well). Located on Hujing's East Mountain, there was a deep pit formed by the natural collapse of rock strata. Groundwater welled up from the pit, and its water quality was sweet and delicious, leading the locals to call this well 'Haojing'. Legend has it that once, when a woman from the island went to fetch water from this 'Haojing' with her child, the child accidentally fell into the well and drowned. To warn others about this well that had once drowned a child, the villagers renamed it 'Hujing'. However, it could also be a homophone derived from the Hokkien pronunciation of 'hu' (tiger) and 'hao' (good).
