Nanliao, formerly known as "Guibigang She" together with Beiliao, developed agriculture after the two villages became independent, due to Nanliao's proximity to the inland. Beiliao, being closer to the sea, developed fishing. Although agriculture is not flourishing in Penghu, and the population of Nanliao village experienced significant out-migration in earlier years, the village still retains many traditional houses built with coral stone. Red tiles and stone walls are distinctive features. The houses come in various forms, including detached units, Sanheyuan (traditional courtyard houses), and collective dwellings for large families. Among this cluster of ancient houses, "Xu Fan Ancient House" is the most iconic.
