During the Ming Dynasty, Penghu was once a transshipment hub for ceramics being sent to Southeast Asia. However, the Dutch East India Company, operating from Jakarta, bypassed Penghu directly and went on to establish an Asian trade base in Taiwan, causing Penghu's status to decline sharply.
