Cai Tinglan Imperial Scholar's Residence

Cai Tinglan was Penghu's first imperial scholar. His birth name was Cai Chongwen, and Tinglan was his courtesy name. Scholars referred to him as Mr. Qiuyuan. He passed the imperial examination in 1845, becoming not only Penghu's first imperial scholar but also its only one. His success consequently inspired the academic atmosphere in Penghu. He also taught for many years at academies such as Tainan Chongwen, Yinxin, and Penghu Wenshi, making invaluable contributions to the development of education in Penghu. Among Cai Tinglan's renowned literary works is "Hainan Zazhu" (Miscellaneous Writings from Hainan), which he penned after being shipwrecked in Vietnam by a typhoon in 1835, documenting his maritime adventures and the local customs of Vietnam. To date, Russian, French, Japanese, and Vietnamese editions of this work have been published.
