Waian Village - Sanxian Pagodas

The Sanxian Pagodas in Waian Village are divided into East and West Sanxian Pagodas, located at two distinct sites. The East Sanxian Pagoda has been covered by surrounding Leucaena leucocephala, while the West Sanxian Pagoda is situated on the west side of the village, standing atop a cliff. It is surrounded by several small bunkers and a brick kiln, and its elevated position offers a panoramic view of the entire Waian Village. It is said that the east and west hills of Waian Village face each other. Early inhabitants believed that the eastern hilltop's southward extension was shorter. Following the principle of "male on the left, female on the right," and given that Waian Village was primarily a fishing community in early times, male villagers frequently suffered maritime accidents. This was attributed to the inherent geographical environment of the settlement. Following the instructions of Lord Wen (Wenfu Wangye), three stone pagodas were built on each of the east and west hilltops. The eastern pagodas faced southwest, while those on the west faced north-south. One set was intended to extend the mountain's influence, symbolizing the lengthening of male lifespans, while the other aimed to shorten female lifespans, thereby achieving a balance of longevity between men and women. The Sanxian Pagodas are located at the highest point of Waian Village, offering a panoramic view of its beautiful scenery.
