Changhua: Taiwan Glove Museum

[Assessment Validity Period: 2021/08/26~2024/08/25] The Glove Museum is located in the Shetou Hosiery Industrial Park. Its unique glove-shaped building was entirely designed by founder Chen, the "Glove Master." The museum also incorporates many of his personal creations, allowing visitors not only to learn about the glove industry but also to appreciate various other exhibits. The surrounding guava orchards and the circular high-speed rail line can be fully viewed from the 3rd-floor observation deck. Through interactive DIY activities, visitors can learn about the basic glove manufacturing process. Founder Mr. Chen Yi-Yi, born in Yilan and a graduate of Fuxing Art and Design School, began his career as an art designer at "Li Chuan Company," a major glove manufacturer at the time. He later rose through the ranks to become R&D team leader, production section chief, and eventually factory director. He then took over the factory and its existing employees to establish "Yi Zhan Company." In 1977, he obtained his first glove invention patents in Taiwan and the United States (for shark ski gloves—this pair of gloves was the inspiration for the entire museum building). In 1984, he authored the only professional book on gloves to date, "GLOVE INDUSTRY," which has been highly praised and studied by glove industry professionals worldwide. In 1985, Glove Master Chen Yi-Yi founded "Yi Zhan Sports Co., Ltd." in Yuanlin Township, Changhua County, central Taiwan. In its early stages, the company primarily focused on producing bulk glove products for export from Taiwan at that time, such as ski gloves, cold-weather and decorative gloves, down gloves, soccer goalkeeper gloves, motorcycle gloves, work gloves, and gardening gloves. Between approximately 1988 and 1995, Taiwan's glove industry faced issues of high costs and labor shortages. Many companies consequently relocated their operations to China, Thailand, Indonesia, and other regions. Some also changed industries, and a considerable number closed down. However, Yi Zhan Company remained steadfast, adapting to changes while staying true to its core, and has continued to operate in Taiwan to this day. Beyond generating revenue, business operators have a definite responsibility and obligation to preserve the cultural heritage and pass on the technical knowledge of their industry. This inspired us with the idea and mission to establish the Taiwan Glove Museum. Integrating his own artistic creations throughout the museum, both the interior and exterior decor, as well as the museum's collections, were all personally designed by Mr. Chen Yi-Yi. 1st Floor: Upon entering the Glove Museum lobby, you can see the world's largest handmade stitched glove. Guided tours introduce the history of glove evolution, and visitors can observe staff making stitched gloves on-site. 2nd Floor: The stone and shell collection area integrates creations by the Glove Master and is well worth exploring. There are also different glove experience zones and a DIY classroom. 3rd Floor: The close-range circular high-speed rail observation deck offers a view of over 220 degrees, allowing you to watch the high-speed train for nearly two minutes. Based on the responsibility and obligation to preserve the industry's cultural heritage and pass on its technical knowledge, Yi Zhan was inspired with the idea and mission to establish the Taiwan Glove Museum. In the future, the company will continue to adapt to changes while staying true to its core, remaining committed to operating in Taiwan.
