Chiayi: Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation Chiayi Tourism Winery

【Assessment Validity Period: 2021/04/01~2024/03/31】 The predecessor of this factory was the Chiayi Factory of Taisho Seishu Co., Ltd., operated by Japanese businessman Akashi Shotaro in Taiwan. The company established the factory in 1916 (Taisho 5, Republic of China 5). In July 1922 (Republic of China 11), the Japanese implemented a liquor monopoly in Taiwan, acquiring and merging over a thousand private distilleries. Liquor factories were then established in various locations including Taipei, Shulin, Taichung, Puli, Chiayi, Tainan, Pingtung, Hualien Port, Taitung, and Yilan. The factory established in Chiayi was initially subordinate to the Tainan Branch of the 'Taiwan Governor-General's Monopoly Bureau'. In 1924 (Republic of China 13), with the establishment of the Chiayi Branch, it was re-assigned to the Chiayi Branch. During the period from 1943 (Republic of China 32) to 1945 (Republic of China 34), coinciding with American bombing raids during World War II, most of the factory's buildings and equipment were damaged by bombing. After Taiwan's retrocession in October 1945 (Republic of China 34), it was taken over by the Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau, which actively undertook repairs. In 1967 (Republic of China 56), due to improvements in sorghum liquor quality, sales surged. In June of that year, approval was granted for expansion and increased production, with a plan to raise the monthly output of sorghum liquor from 400 hectoliters to 6,000 hectoliters. Construction began in October of the same year, and the expansion and increased production plan was completed in September 1970 (Republic of China 59). To accommodate the expansion and increased production plan, the factory relocated to Minxiong Industrial Park in Chiayi County, with the relocation carried out in two phases. Shaoxing Liquor Factory Relocation: Groundbreaking and construction began on September 14, 1983 (Republic of China 72). The relocation was completed, and production commenced on January 4, 1988 (Republic of China 77). Sorghum Liquor Factory Relocation: The relocation was completed from July 1990 (Republic of China 79) until the 'Chiayi Distillery Relocation Completion Ceremony' was held on November 15, 1998 (Republic of China 87).
