Visitor Essentials

Shanlin is the district with the second-highest proportion of Hakka people in Kaohsiung. The Huang Family Compound, located in Yuemei Village, has a history of over a century, bearing witness to the process of Hakka ancestors settling and developing Shanlin. Above the main beam of the entrance archway, "Filial Piety and Fraternity as an Enduring Tradition" is inscribed, while "Generations of Scholars of the Five Classics" is inscribed on the back. This symbolizes the family's legacy passed down through filial piety, fully demonstrating how the Huang family diligently adheres to ancestral teachings, encouraging descendants across generations to be friendly to others, filial to elders, and diligent in their studies. The fan decorations on the archway are inspired by the story of Huang Xiang's "fanning the pillow to cool the mat and warming the quilt" from the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars. It is the most completely preserved memorial archway in the Hakka region.
