Erren River Waterfront Park

Originating from Shanjuhu in Muzha Village, Neimen District, Kaohsiung City, the Erren River serves as the boundary between Kaohsiung and Tainan. From the 1970s to 2000, the middle reaches of the Erren River were a concentrated area for factories specializing in scrap metal recycling and refining. The upper reaches also housed pig farms and livestock breeding facilities, causing the Erren River water to become foul-smelling and black, with pollution levels reaching the highest in Taiwan. Since extensive remediation efforts began in 2001, the Erren River has gradually regained its vitality in recent years. The district office has established two viewing platforms, Wabo and Changlu, and a waterfront park within Alian District, featuring a wild plant observation area, a camping ground, and an artificial lake. Aside from wooden boardwalks, most of the riverbanks have retained their original natural appearance. Aquatic plants provide habitat for birds and other flora and fauna. Overlooking the panoramic view of the Erren River, lush greenery and tranquil scenery are all within sight. Erren River Waterfront Park is an excellent spot for family outings and birdwatching, and also the best testament to ecological restoration.
