Fengyi Academy

Fengyi Academy, located next to the City God Temple, was built in 1814 and designated a Class 3 historical monument in 1985 (the 74th year of the Republic). It was constructed by Zhang Ting-qin, a gongsheng (tribute student) and candidate for teaching instructor in Fongshan. At that time, it comprised 37 rooms and originally enshrined the deities Wenchang, Kuichang, and Cangjie, equipped with desks and chairs. It served as a place for students to study and take annual examinations in ancient times. The architectural details are very meticulous, making it the largest existing academy in Taiwan. The spirit screen in front of the academy's main hall and the stone drums on either side of the main entrance both demonstrate the meticulous thought put into Fengyi Academy's original architectural design. Following planned renovations in 2009 (the 98th year of the Republic), the campus saw the addition of many chibi-style statues and two exhibition spaces, offering detailed introductions to the academy's history, evolution, and artifact displays, thereby blending education with entertainment.
