Qiaotou Old Street (Former Residence of Yu Deng-fa)

Mr. Yu Deng-fa, who started from scratch, was a son of the countryside, born in Kaohsiung in 1904. He was the first non-KMT popularly elected county magistrate in Taiwan's local self-governance history, making significant contributions to Taiwan's democratic politics and the development of Kaohsiung County. In 1979, Yu Deng-fa was arrested by intelligence agencies for his alleged involvement in the Wu Tai-an spy case and sentenced to eight years in prison. Non-KMT figures from all over Taiwan gathered at Yu Deng-fa's old residence in Qiaotou for a demonstration and march, protesting the KMT government's political persecution. This was the first political demonstration and march nationwide during the KMT's rule, historically known as the 'Qiaotou Incident.' In December of the same year, the Formosa Incident occurred. To commemorate this pioneer of Taiwanese democracy, who was independent-minded throughout his life and dared to argue with the ruling authorities based on reason, his former residence was renovated and opened to the public. The exhibition area is approximately 100 ping. The first floor displays photos and artifacts belonging to Mr. Yu, highlighting his character of not fearing power and speaking out for the people, and emphasizing the inevitable struggles within the political environment of the time. The second floor presents the 'Qiaotou Incident,' which holds significant importance in Taiwan's democratic history, along with a chronology of Mr. Yu's major life events, historical e-books, and more. Remembering our ancestors and understanding past history helps us realize that democracy is hard-won, and it is something for future generations to reflect upon and cherish.
