Duona residents refer to their community as 'Kunadavan.' The Duona Tribe is comprised of several smaller settlements and is currently one of the most well-preserved tribes in terms of Rukai traditional culture within Maolin District. Traditional slate houses, along with distinctive Rukai totems and stone carvings, can be seen throughout the area. Behind the community, nestled within the surrounding mountains, lies a broad, flat plateau where unique black rice is cultivated. Each year, the 'Tapakarhavae' Black Rice Festival is held to commemorate blessings from heaven and pray for a bountiful harvest in the coming year.
