Kaohsiung City Shadow Play Museum

Over 300 years ago, shadow play was introduced from Chaozhou, mainland China, establishing Kaohsiung as an important hub for Taiwanese shadow play preservation. To maintain and promote this valuable traditional art, the Shadow Play Museum underwent extensive renovations in 2013, reopening in Gangshan with a brand new look. The museum's exterior features a unique leather-woven style with intersecting pure white lines, creating distinct light and shadow effects throughout the day and night. Visitors are also impressed by the magnificent mosaic shadow puppet murals. Inside, the museum is divided into six major themed areas: the 'Learning Classroom,' 'Exhibition Area,' 'Research Room,' 'Theater,' 'Digital Shadow Play Theater,' and 'Experience Zone.' Its interactive guided tours strike a balance between traditional preservation and modern technological development. With regular monthly performances, visitors can enjoy simple, traditional opera performances on the original ox-cart stage, or leisurely appreciate the exquisite and intricate leather carving collections within the museum, ensuring this delicate traditional craft continues to thrive in Kaohsiung.
