City-Designated Historic Site - Zhuliao Water Intake Station

Completed and opened in 1913, the Zhuliao Water Intake Station is located on the banks of the Xiadanshui River (now Gaoping River) in Dashu District. It has been in continuous use since the Japanese colonial period for over a century, stands as an important historical legacy of Taiwan's waterworks facilities, and remains operational today. The main building is a Western-style architecture from the Japanese colonial period, featuring red brick walls, curved facades, and eye-catching green window frames. The engine room and repair workshop feature large-span wooden structures designed to accommodate modern pumping equipment. The building's style was influenced by early 20th-century European modern design, giving it a unique character. In addition to providing abundant irrigation water for agriculture in Dashu District, the water intake station was also the heart of Kaohsiung's earliest public water supply system. It is a revolutionary and universally significant architectural project in the history of Kaohsiung's urban development and has been designated a municipal historic site.
