Tapani Cultural Park

In 1915, as Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan entered its 20th year, deep-seated resentment grew due to an unjust tax system, a biased legal framework, and an all-encompassing police 'officer' system that intervened in every aspect of life. Consequently, Yu Ching-fang and others began raising funds for an anti-Japanese resistance, ostensibly for the repair of the Xilai Temple. That summer, the Tapani region erupted in what became the largest armed anti-Japanese uprising since Japan took control of Taiwan. Hundreds died in battle during the incident, and thousands more perished. People arrested and sentenced for their involvement in this event were found across the entire island. This historical event is known as the Tapani Incident, also referred to as the Xilai Temple Incident or the Yu Ching-fang Incident.
