The banyan trees at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) have always been one of Tainan's iconic symbols. Legend has it that they were personally planted in 1923 by Japan's Crown Prince Hirohito (later Emperor Showa) during his visit to Taiwan. To this day, the banyan trees stand tall daily, like benevolent old alumni, watching over the NCKU campus, welcoming new students from all over and bidding farewell to many graduates who have completed their studies. Every graduation season, many students take photos here to commemorate their time, filled with bittersweet farewells.
