Imperial Portrait Enshrinement Hall (Former Xinhua Elementary School)

The Goshin'ei Hoan-den (Imperial Portrait Enshrinement Hall) is a very unique attraction in Tainan, tucked away in a corner of Xinhua Elementary School. It offers a glimpse into colonial education during the Japanese rule. 'Goshin'ei' refers to the portraits of the Japanese Emperor and Empress, while 'Hoan-den' signifies a place of enshrinement. The purpose was for students to see the Emperor's and Empress's portraits daily during morning assemblies. The principal would also retrieve and read the Imperial Rescript on Education from the Hoan-den, continuously imbuing the imperial system and the concept of national polity into the colonized people of the time.
