Hulupi, a historical pond, was excavated around 1770 AD for irrigation and water storage. It was anciently known as Fanzi Tianpi. Later, a road ran through it, making it resemble a gourd tied with a ribbon, hence it was named Hulupi (Gourd Pond). Numerous water caltrop fields surround it, where farmers often paddle small boats. This scenery has become one of the 'Eight New Scenic Views of Nanying,' known as 'Water Caltrop Fragrance and Boat Shadows.' The pheasant-tailed jacana, known as the 'fairy of the waves,' also thrives in the well-preserved surrounding ecosystem. Whenever you take the High-Speed Rail into Tainan, you will surely spot the red suspension bridge over the lake, extending like the arc of a water caltrop amidst the croaking fields and shimmering lake.
