Dong'anfang Cultural Park

Dong'anfang is centered around the East Gate (Dongmen City Gate), and the area encompasses historic churches, the City God Temple, and the Dongyue Temple. At that time, the area east of the East Gate of the Prefectural City (Tainan) was an important settlement for Western missionaries upon their arrival in Tainan. Taiwan's first university, Tainan Theological College and Seminary; Taiwan's first modern hospital, Sin Lau Hospital; Taiwan's first secondary school and girls' secondary school, Chang Jung Academy and Chang Jung Girls' High School; and the Presbyterian Church News Agency, among others, were all located in this vicinity. Conversely, west of the East Gate is where the Dongyue Temple and City God Temple, which oversee the underworld, are located. This area corresponds to today's Minquan Road and Qingnian Road. Due to these religious connections, the district continues to be primarily dominated by industries related to traditional folk beliefs even today.
