Wutiaogang Cultural Park

The Wutiaogang Cultural Park is arguably one of the areas with the richest historical texture in Tainan's West Central District. During the mid-Qing Dynasty, the Taijiang Lagoon gradually silted up, but five waterways still connected the sea to Fucheng. The areas around these five river ports became bustling commercial centers, forming the prototype of today's West Central District in downtown Tainan. From north to south, the five river ports were Xin’gangqian Port, Fotou Port, Nanshi Port, Nanhe Port, and Anhai Port. The approximate area was south of Chenggong Road, west of Xinmei Street, and extending south to around Zhongzheng Road. Looking at the current landscape, there are no discernible traces of what the river ports once looked like. Only by observing the locations of Shuixian Temple, Kaiji Wumiao Temple, Beishi Street, and Fengshen Temple, can one roughly discern the remnants of the river ports within the Wutiaogang Cultural Park. It only took about a century for the river ports to flourish and then completely disappear, yet they laid the foundation for Fucheng's commercial center. It's a testament to how much things change over time, a truly legendary story.
