Former Remains of the East Gate Section of the Taiwan Prefectural City Wall

This remnant wall is located on Guanghua Street, between the Dadongmen (Great East Gate) and Xiaodongmen (Small East Gate). Based on its structure and appearance, it is presumed to have been built in the 53rd year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1788), concurrently with the remains of the Xiaodongmen section within the present-day Cheng Kung University Guangfu Campus. During the Qing Dynasty, after the Zhu Yigui incident occurred in Taiwan, permission was granted in the 11th year of Emperor Yongzheng's reign (1733) to construct a wooden palisade and bamboo city wall. In the 53rd year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1788), the Lin Shuangwen incident took place. After its suppression, to strengthen the defense of the prefectural city, the wooden palisade and bamboo city wall were replaced with an earthen wall. The ramparts became increasingly solid and grander in scale, laying the foundation for its later development. Subsequently, in the 12th year of Emperor Daoguang's reign (1833), after the Zhang Bing Rebellion, the outer city was expanded. The city walls were progressively dismantled starting from the 44th year of Meiji (1911), when the Tainan Urban Improvement Plan was implemented.
