Red House, National University of Tainan

The most prominent red building inside the gates of National University of Tainan is the original main building of Tainan Normal School, built in 1922. At that time, it was called "Taiwan Governor-General's Office Tainan Normal School." In 1945, during World War II, it was hit by an air raid shell, and its roof was almost completely destroyed. It was not until 1947 that it was rebuilt and restored. The building has a double-cross shape, with red bricks as its main architectural element, earning it the name "Red House." In front of the main building stands a Ryukyu pine tree, said to have been planted in 1923 during Crown Prince Hirohito's visit. Together with the Red House, it has become a spiritual symbol of the University of Tainan. Every June and July, the golden shower trees (阿勃勒) inside the Red House blossom profusely. The golden flower cascades and the red brick walls complement each other beautifully, making it an excellent time to visit the building.
