East Gate

The East Gate is located at the intersection of Dongmen Road and Shengli Road, a crucial traffic artery in the city center. Situated there, it has become a roundabout with the distinct feel of a Tainan landmark. The eastern arch is inscribed with 'Dong'an Gate,' and the western arch with 'Yingchun Gate.' The city gate is exceptionally well-maintained, with its original firing ports, once used to defend the city against invaders, still perfectly intact. When illuminated at night, it appears as magnificent as Tainan's Arc de Triomphe. Because it's in the middle of a roundabout, fewer tourists venture inside. However, within the gate, there is a stele erected in 1848 with an important inscription: 'By imperial decree, soldiers are forbidden from extorting farmers, merchants, or peddlers who pass through this gate.' This is a very precious and interesting stele inside the East Gate. Next time you pass by, don't just rush past; go inside and explore the main thoroughfare that residents of the former city used to travel.
