Xihuatang

Nestled between Tainan Railway Station and Tainan Park, Xihuatang is truly a hidden gem in the heart of the bustling city. Stepping through the busy main roads and into a small alley, you'll feel as if you've entered another tranquil world. Established in 1750, Xihuatang is a vegetarian temple (zhaitang) of the Weng Yongfeng branch within the Jinzhuang lineage of the Zhaijiao tradition. It primarily enshrines the Three Precious Buddhas. Many devout practitioners still reside here, engaging in worship and spiritual cultivation. The serene and solemn atmosphere unfailingly brings a sense of inner peace to visitors upon entering Xihuatang. Despite its nearly 300-year history, Xihuatang's architecture has been remarkably well-preserved. Its main hall, verandas, and eaves all transport visitors back in time by several centuries. If you come to Tainan, don't rush to find local snacks right after leaving the train station; instead, come and witness this excellent example of a city and its historical sites coexisting in perfect harmony.
