Zonggan Temple

Zonggan Temple was built around 1704 AD. At that time, all travel between Taiwan and mainland China relied entirely on ships, which led to the custom of worshipping deities who protect sea transport. The main deity enshrined in Zonggan Temple, Ni Sheng Gong, is also known as Ni Zong Guan. During his lifetime, he lived by the coast and was very familiar with shipping routes and port channels. Consequently, Ni Sheng Gong, who oversees maritime transport and protects the ancient Taijiang waterways, became a unique deity in Tainan. Some even say that Ni Sheng Gong is the only deity who can pilot a ship.
