Visitor Essentials

The Yanping Street Ancient Well is located on the flagstone street (now Yanping Street) of Tayuan Market, southeast of Fort Zeelandia in Anping. It was a valuable source of fresh water in the Anping area at the time, with legends claiming its water was abundant and sweet-tasting. It was continuously used by locals. In the 12th year of the Taishō era during Japanese rule (1923), a tap water system began to be established in Anping. However, the Yanping Street Ancient Well was not abandoned because of this. Bean sprouts cultivated with its water were renowned for their delicious taste, a reputation that spread throughout the market, attracting many people who came specifically to buy them. The area near the ancient well was formerly known as "Doucai Liao" (Bean Sprout Shed), and the well itself was called "Doucai Ya Zi Jing" (Bean Sprout Well). During World War II, as the tap water system was damaged by war, the well water once again supplied local residents for drinking. It was only abandoned again after the tap water system was restored, which explains its current appearance.
