Wufei Temple

Wufei Temple is situated on the tranquil Wufei Street, enveloped by ancient trees. Visitors must ascend a series of stone steps to reach it, enhancing the ancient temple's serene and timeless ambiance. Unlike most temples that enshrine Buddhist or Taoist deities, this temple commemorates Yuan, Wang, Xiugu, Meijie, and Hejie—five individuals who were deified. They were the concubines and consorts of Prince Ningjing during the Koxinga (Zheng) era. Historical accounts record that when Shi Lang invaded Taiwan, Prince Ningjing Zhu Shugui of the Ming dynasty resolved to commit suicide for his country. His five concubines decided to share their husband's fate and successively hanged themselves in Prince Ningjing's residence. After Zhu Shugui personally buried his five concubines, he also committed suicide as a martyr for his country.
