Chihkan Tower

Chihkan Tower can be considered the most significant historical building in Tainan's West Central District, and, along with Anping Fort in Anping, one of Tainan's two major landmarks. In 1652, the Dutch established Fort Provintia here, thereby laying the foundation for Tainan's administrative and commercial center. After more than 300 years and numerous renovations and reconstructions, it has taken on its present appearance. Inside, it houses the Sea God Temple, Wenchang Pavilion, and Penghu Academy. On the surrounding lawn stands a statue of Koxinga receiving a surrender, which always prompts both local and international tourists to examine it closely, imagining Koxinga's heroic spirit in those days. What truly captures attention are the nine imperial steles, relocated from beside the Great South Gate, which are carried by Bixi, a mythical creature resembling a stone turtle. Legend has it that Bixi is one of the nine sons of the dragon, naturally fond of carrying heavy loads. Because of Bixi, Chihkan Tower has accumulated many legendary tales that are still widely recounted today.
